KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Police Department is working to keep officer-involved shootings as low as possible, but sometimes the situation can’t be avoided.
The most recent case was in January when a man stopped his car on I-435 near Front Street during a police chase and fired at officers, forcing them to shoot back and kill him. This prompted KCPD to examine the number of officer-involved shootings over the past 10 years and here’s what they found:
- From 2002 to 2012 there were 132 officer-involved shootings.
- 47 ended with a suspect dead
- 47 ended with a suspect hurt
- 11 resulted with an officer hurt
Officer-involved shootings are most likely to happen during armed suspect and shots fired calls.
