KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Episode Four: “Cal Sweeney”
When Alcatraz settled into its 8 p.m. time slot last week I wondered why FOX chose to put it at 8 p.m. and not at 7 p.m. The violence has to be the reason why. It isn’t as graphic as a show on HBO, but it still surprises me to see someone get shot in the head and the hand with what they kill cattle with.
The show is full of surprises, but it is falling into a formula. Each episode starts with an introduction of one of the prisoners of Alcatraz into our current timeline, then it flashes back to the 1960s to tell the story of their crime and time on the island. Then we watch as Detective Rebecca Madsen and Dr. Diego Soto try and track down the prisoner so Emerson Hauser can take them to his newly constructed Alcatraz prison. I feel the season will end with them all or some of them breaking out of the new Alcatraz. I hope it won’t become that predictable.
Alcatraz is keeping my attention and it is still hard not to compare it to LOST with all the flashbacks and similar music. Next week, the preview seems to make us believe they are taking a break from the prisoner formula and the episode will focus on one of the Alcatraz guards. It looks good!
Ratings-wise Alcatraz is still holding an audience in the Kansas City area. Last night’s episode was #2 behind Two & A Half Men, followed by The Bachelor at #3 and Fear Factor at #4.
