KANSAS CITY, Mo. – It is estimated that nearly one in four children have untreated cavities and many children receive no dental care throughout the year.
However, a local dental school is giving kids a reason to smile.
On Thursday, Concorder Career Colleege’s dental hygiene clinic offered dental cleanings to children 18 years of age and under for 50 metro area families.
“We think it’s important to give back to the community and we want to provide those services to children who otherwise wouldn’t be seen,” said the college’s Dr. Lisa Thurlow, DDS.
Sponsored by the American Dental Association, this is the 11th year that the college has offered dental cleanings for local children, trying to spreading the word that good oral health is important for everyone.
“We’re excited about seeing children who have rarely seen a dentist. We encourage them to come to our clinic where we have reduced fees for services throughout the year. In doing this program throughout the year, we have the opportunity to at least take care of them once a year,” Dr. Thurlow told FOX 4 News.
“When it’s their first dental visit, we like to make it a very positive dental experience for them so they want to go to the dentist,” Thurlow added.
