KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Two children, who prosecutors say were held under water by their mother in an attempt to kill them, have been released from the hospital. The lawyer for the mother, 23-year-old Johnna Green, says the two girls are out of the University of Kansas Hospital and are doing much better than many expected. Green is charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder for allegedly trying to drown her two girls, ages 1 and 4.
On April 2, police rushed to the 2900 block of South 52nd Street to find both girls not breathing outside the bathroom of the home. Firefighters say the girls were wet and unconscious. Paramedics tried to resuscitate them on the scene.
And eventually first-responders transported them to the University of Kansas Hospital where both children initially were listed in critical condition. Since that time, FOX 4 News has learned that the two girls are making remarkable recoveries.
“One of the things I’m most happy about is that both of those girls are doing a lot better,” said Paul Morrison, Green’s attorney. “In fact they have both been released from the hospital now. So not only are they going to make it, but they appear to be in real good shape.”
Green remains in the Wyandotte County Jail on $1 million bond. Morrison tells FOX 4 News she’s doing as well as can be expected.
A civil proceeding: called a “child in need of care” hearing determines who should look after the children.
Sources say usually the courts and state social service workers seek out a responsible family member to become temporary guardian.
Morrison says he’s waiting to review police reports on this investigation. Green’s next court hearing is scheduled on May 14 at 8:30 a.m.
