A recent Carfax report says more than two million recalled cars were for sale online in 2012. Consumer Attorney A.J. Stecklein explains how car shoppers can avoid buying a car that has been recalled.
What do you look for when shopping for a car to ensure it’s not recalled?
- Do your own research. Don’t rely on the dealers or salesmen.
- Before hitting a car lot, look up the vehicles you’re interested in at: odi.nhtsa.dot.gov and www.safercar.gov.
What are some options if you buy a recalled car and realize it after the fact?
- Call the manufacturer to get it fixed for free. There’s a list of manufacturers’ contact information at consumerlegalclinic.com
- Speak with an attorney who is familiar with consumer law to see if you are in the clear
