KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 13-year-old boy is dead after his brother lost control of a car and crashed Wednesday night at 27th Street and Elmood in Kansas City, Mo.
Witnesses tell FOX 4 News that they saw a late ’80s Ford Mustang speeding eastbound on 27th Street at about 9 p.m.
Police said the driver of the car lost control and the Mustang spun out, shearing off a utility pole near the corner of 27th and Elmwood. Two brothers were inside the car.
Relatives have identified them as Braxton Woods, 13, and his 21-year-old brother, Jocobe.
Braxton suffered severe head injuries, and police confirmed that he died at the hospital.
“I heard some skidding so I looked up the street and when I looked up the street, the stuff happened so fast, the car was coming down the street like 90 miles an hour,” said Monica Hayes, a neighbor who witnessed the crash.
“I think whoever was driving was trying to hold onto the wheel. I guess the wheel got loose. and he was trying to hold onto it, and then he did a 360 and he went through both of them poles and when I looked up the car was just in smoke.”
A number of people in the neighborhood helped get the Braxton out of the wreckage, including a cousin of the brothers. But the younger boy’s injuries were too severe, police tell FOX 4 News he died at the hospital. Witnesses describe the driver as being in a state of shock when paramedics rushed him to the hospital.
The force of the crash sent debris flying, and some of it hit a nearby car stopped at the intersection. The driver jumped out to help the brothers and others ran over to help.
“He was bleeding from the head and he was spitting up blood. I was telling everyone to talk to him and they said he was having a hard time breathing,” said Cassaundra Samuels, who witnessed the aftermath.
Relatives tell us Jacobe was treated and released from the hospital.
“The driver was in a state of shock. He was in shock but once they started checking him he just fell to the ground. They had him still for a minute. They put him on a stretcher and rushed him to the hospital too,” Mahlon Davis, another witness, said.
