KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An old school on Kansas City’s northeast side will open next month with a new name and a new purpose.
“Oh I think that’ s great. It will be real convenient for Riley,” says an excited Chantalle Steele who lives across the street.
Steele is looking forward to enrolling her 3-year-old son, Riley, in the Woodland Early Learning Community School near Woodland and East 7th Street.
Nearly 300 little ones from the school district”s northeast side area will attend the school.
The school district hopes to unite with potential partners including Kansas City Public Library and the YMCA to “support and nurture students” development so they’re better prepared by the time they reach kindergarten.
“We will initially start with three- and four-year-olds and then reach out to one and two year olds. We want to consolidate early learning and headstart skills the children learn. We think this will be more efficient,” says Superintendent Dr. R. Stephen Green.
Two more early learning school’s will open in midtown and on the city’s south side for the 2014-2015 school year.
The first day of school for Woodland’s students us August 12.
“I’m glad they are reopening that old school and turning it into a new school to help my son and other children be the best students they possibly can ,” says Craig Brooks, who lives near Woodland.
