KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The dangerously high temperatures combined with humidity can cause a deadly mixture especially for the elderly. Protecting ourselves from heat illness like dehydration and heat stroke can be as simple as drinking a glass of water.
The experts suggest 7-10 ounces several times an hour. The body needs the fluid to produce the sweat that keeps a body cool. Santiago Prada, who is a YMCA instructor, says it can take only 10 minutes for the body to overheat.
“As it starts getting humid outside, it becomes hard for your bodies to get rid of sweat,” Prada said. “So with the humidity rising, our body isn’t able to cool off the way it should.”
So whether you’re outside working or walking or running, hydration is the key.
