SPRING HILL, Kan. — A school resource officer discovered a handgun a student’s backpack at Spring Hill High School in Spring Hill, Kan., on Thursday.

According to a school press release, the resource officer responded to a student in need of care request outside of the Spring Hill High School building. In the interest of the student’s welfare, the student was taken into custody without incident. In the course of checking the student’s backpack, a handgun was found.

“The school district’s top priority is the safety and security of students and staff,” said Dr. Wayne Burke, interim superintendent. “We are very pleased that we were able to ensure the safety of everyone. We would like to commend the student who brought this to our attention as well as the school resource officer and school administration for their quick and effective response. We will be providing support to all students and staff.”
