TORONTO, Ontario – James Shields scattered three hits over seven innings to help shut out the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon. Shields also struck out nine and improved his record to 10-8 while the Royals gave him enough run support to avoid being swept by the Blue Jays.
Eric Hosmer and Emilio Bonifacio drove the offensive production against starter J.A. Happ. Hosmer drove in three runs and Bonifacio scored twice and stole two bases against his former club. Bonifacio has stolen almost as many bases (11) in 18 games with the Royals as he had in 94 games with the Blue Jays (12).
The Royals return home to start a seven-game homestand on Monday; they’ll host the Seattle Mariners for four games and the Detroit Tigers for three. Danny Duffy will toe the rubber on Monday night and go head-to-head with American League Cy Young candidate Felix Hernandez.
