KANSAS CITY, Mo. — With 19 games to go the Royals are in the thick of a playoff chase. After beating the Detroit Tigers 5-2 on Sunday afternoon, the Royals are now three-and-a-half games back in the race for the second of two American League Wild Card spots.
The Royals fell behind 2-0 on Sunday but then got an RBI single from Billy Butler, and a three-run home run from Eric Hosmer to take a 4-2 lead in the sixth inning. Alex Gordon later added a run scoring single, and the Royals took two out of three against the division leaders from Detroit.
With 19 games remaining in the regular season schedule, the Royals are still in the hunt for their first post-season berth in 28 years. Monday they start a three-game series in Cleveland against the Indians and then travel to Detroit to meet the Tigers again next weekend.
