KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Five police officers were recovering after responding to a meth lab where a man was found dead of a suspected overdose late Sunday night at 31st and Grand.

Police were called out to the apartment complex at about 9:00 p.m. Sunday. They found the man dead, but police quickly evacuated the building because of the strong odors coming from the man’s apartment.

“They realized there was possibly some type of laboratory that might be making some type of narcotic,” said Michael Hicks, KCMO Police captain.

The meth lab was located in the apartment’s bathroom.

Residents were evacuated from the building for about four hours while the apartment was cleaned up by a hazardous materials team. They were allowed back inside at about 3:30 Monday morning.

Two people at the Towerside Apartments were arrested for drug charges.

The officers exposed to the strongest fumes were taken to the hospital as a precaution, along with two other people who were also experiencing symptoms from the toxic fumes.
