LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. — Authorities are calling a shooting that left a Lee’s Summit teen injured accidental, but prosecutors may still file charges in the case.

Police say that a teen girl was seriously wounded in an accidental shooting in the lower level of a Lee’s Summit home in the 500 block of Castle Drive on Friday evening. According to authorities, the girl was visiting a girlfriend who was playing with a 9 mm handgun when it went off, with a bullet hitting her in the head.

She was taken to an area hospital, where her condition is listed as serious but stable. Her identity, as well as the identity of the teen who shot her, have not been released.

Teen Accidentally Shot in Lee’s Summit

Police say that the gun’s owner lived at the house, but was not at home at the time of the shooting.  Another adult was home at the time of the accident.

Lee’s Summit Police Sgt. Chris DePue says that some states, like California, have trigger look or safe storage laws, requiring gun owners to keep their weapons safe or secure while in their possession.

Missouri does not have such a law, but DePue says any time there’s negligence involved, there’s a possibility for some sort of criminal charge. That decision will be up to the Jackson County prosecutor.
