JOHNSON COUNTY, Kan. — While trick or treaters are going door to door Halloween night, paroled sex offenders will be attending a mandatory class in Johnson County. If they fail to attend, their paroles will be revoked.
The county has held the Halloween training sessions for the last five years and they’ve been very effective. Sex offenders will learn about victim empathy and setting boundaries during the three-hour session from 6-9, which is prime-time for trick or treating.
While Kansas law won’t allow law enforcement to require all offenders to attend, for those on parole and still under court supervision it’s mandatory.
The sessions keep the streets safe and the offenders away from temptation and it also promotes rehabilitation.
Sex offenders are not supposed to participate in any Halloween activity like wearing costumes, handing out candy or keeping their porch lights on.
