KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Children, teachers and all school staff were kept out of their school building Thursday morning because of a gas odor.
The gas company responded, along with Kansas City, Kan. firefighters to Francis Willard Elementary at 34th and Orville at about 7:45 a.m. because of the strange odor a teacher smelled when the furnace was turned on.
The odor was detected before children began arriving. When they did arrive for school, the children were kept outside of the building.
The gas company determined the odor was caused by a panel becoming dislodged on the furnace unit and the odor was exhaust, not gas.
The school was ventilated and classes were back in session.
