KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The bitter cold is forcing many people who live on the streets to seek shelter at the City Union Mission.
Usually around 300 men sleep at the shelter, but winter weather has driven many more to find comfort behind the mission’s doors. Recently as many as 350 people have slept at the shelter each night, which has created some supply shortages.
Because the City Union Mission doesn’t receive government funding, they depend on donations — monetary and items left at drop off donation sites. But even the weather has prevented people from delivering items to drop off bins. The mission has even experienced a shortage of staff as some employees and volunteers found themselves snowed in.
“We’re running out of breakfast cereal, cold cereal yesterday and oatmeal, but I think that’s a temporary thing,” Dan Doty with City Union Mission said. “I think there’s just always a need, especially for canned protein, meats, canned fruit, canned vegetables, things like that,” Doty said.
