KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The man responsible for watching the two-year-old boy who was found wandering a Kansas City street on Tuesday, March 25, has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Police described James Mathys as the roommate responsible for watching 2-year-old A.J. while his mother, Jessica Scott, 22, was in an Indiana court pleading guilty to robbery charges.

As for little A.J., police said on March 25, he dressed himself, walked out of the house and wandered half a block away, all alone. Two construction workers who found him said he first walked along the sidewalk and then darted into the busy street after a dog.

“He came right up talking. I asked him if it’s his dog and he said ‘yeah,’ and I asked him where he lived, if he lives around here and he said ‘yeah,’ and I asked him if his mom was home and he said, ‘no she left,’” said Drew Shippy.

A.J. remains in state custody. Read more here.
