DE SOTO, Kan. — Shooting is a big hobby for many in the Kansas City metro, but for others it’s part of the job. On Saturday gun enthusiasts got to test their aim shooting alongside some of the best in law enforcement during the Sheriff’s Office Shootout for Special Olympics.
Dennis brown is a pretty good shot for a civilian.
“I did pretty well, there were two in the black that doesn’t count for any points as well,” he said.
Brown shoots just about every week, but it’s not often he gets to shoot with a cop or deputy.
“Almost never know, it’s good to come out here with them and compare your scores,” said Brown.
Saturday brown and dozens of other civilians got to compete against the pros at Millcreek Rifle Club.
“Can I outshoot the guy with the badge? Heck yes,” said Brown, who wasn’t the only one wondering that.
Every shot benefits Special Olympics Kansas, an organization that has long been supported by law enforcement.
“You have to find what is an interest to them something that’s fun and enjoyable and then they can interact and then we can get our message about Special Olympics and the need to support our athletes out, throughout the state of Kansas,” said Debbie Larimore with Special Olympics Kansas.

The shootout raised more than $7,000 for Special Olympics Kansas.
