RUSS
Welcome to this special edition of the Screening Room, Movies at Home Edition. I’m Russ Simmons.
SHAWN
And I am Shawn Edwards. And it’s Memorial Day Weekend which is the unofficial/official start of summer. So we are offering you our Summer DVD preview edition.
RUSS
Today, we’re going to take a look at our picks for the best DVDs you can look forward to this Summer.
SHAWN
Yes, these are the titles you have to see while traveling to your favorite vacation spot or when you are just chillin’ on the beach or in the house just trying to stay cool on sweltering summer day or hot summer night.
1. THE LEGO MOVIE (PG)
Warner Brothers
SHAWN
First, it’s the best movie of 2013 so far — a zany, irreverent, absolutely brilliant animated feature about a popular children’s toy. Yes, “The Lego Movie” is all that and a bag of chips or box of blocks. Smart fun and awesome in every way.
2. ABOUT LAST NIGHT (R)
Sony Pictures
SHAWN
Looking for a little romance? Well the ’80s rom-com “About Last Night” gets a hip and very funny urban make over courtesy Kevin Hart and his friends. Sexy, over the top and highly entertaining battle of the sexes.
3. 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE (R)
Warner Brothers
SHAWN
And it isn’t a sequel to “300” but sort of a continuation with a a battle on sea set at the same time of that back in the day classic. Visually stunning and action packed. No drop off here.
4. THE BOONDOCKS (TV series-Comedy Central/Cartoon Network)
SHAWN
And finally the complete series of the politically incorrect but insightfully brilliant animated show “The Boondocks.” Edgy and raw bit genius in it’s execution. This political satire will have you rethinking your politics and adjusting your attitudes toward race relations in America.
RUSS:
And here are my picks for Summer viewing.
5. THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL (R)
Fox Searchlight
RUSS
Wes Anderson, the king of quirky filmmaking, returns with yet another visually arresting and whimsical oddball comedy called “The Grand Budapest Hotel.” Ralph Fiennes plays the concierge at a swanky European resort in the 1930’s.
It takes place in a cartoonish alternate universe that will undoubtedly charm his fans. Others may find it hard to tune in to his idiosyncratic humor.
6. BREAKING BAD: THE COMPLETE SERIES
(Sony Pictures Home Entertainment)
RUSS
For my other choice, I’m making the leap to TV, too. “Breaking Bad” is certainly better than the vast majority of movies you’re likely to see. Here’s the catch: To appreciate the depth and nuances of this brilliant modern tragedy, you have to see all 62 episodes…and the complete boxed set is available on June 3rd. It’s no exaggeration to rank it as one of the best, if not THE best, TV series of all time. The Greek masters would recognize it as one of their own.
