XINXIANG CITY, China – Two people have died and three others were injured when a woman in China dropped her brand new cell phone into an “open-pit” toilet while she was using it.

According to the South China Morning Post, when the woman dropped the phone, worth approximately $320, into the sewage her husband went to retrieve it, but could not breathe and lost consciousness. When the woman’s mother-in-law saw her son unconscious below, she went to save him and then fainted as well.

After the woman, who dropped the phone, went in after the two victims, she also lost consciousness. Her father-in-law called to neighbors, who came over to help.

When neighbors arrived the older man had entered the pit but was not able to get out, and two of the neighbors also ended up going inside and also passing out.

Other neighboring villagers used a rope to retrieve the six victims, who then waited over an hour for the ambulance to arrive.

The woman’s husband and mother-in-law later died at the hospital due to suffocation. The woman and a neighbor were treated for injuries in the intensive care unit, and the woman’s father-in-law was also injured.
