KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Charges related to the shooting death of 41-year-old Greg Moody were filed by the juvenile officer of the Jackson County Family Court on Wednesday against two teenagers. A 14-year-old boy has been charged with second-degree murder, two counts of second-degree assault and one count of first-degree assault. Additionally, a 13-year-old boy has been charged with four counts second-degree assault.
All charges are felonies and both teens are still in custody at the Jackson County Juvenile Detention Center.
According to police officers, several people reported hearing gunfire in the 6300 block of 127th Street in Grandview, Mo. on Monday night. Relatives identified the victim as Greg Moody, who died at the hospital after being shot once in the chest.
Witnesses say that Moody was talking to the 14-year-old and trying to seize a loaded gun he was holding when the teen shot him. This followed an incident where the teen reportedly had fired a gunshot into a home. Witness Michelle Eicke said the teen shot through her living room wall and shot her son’s friend in the hip.
“This is absolutely senseless on the part of the young man and it’s just senseless on the part of whoever provided him with the gun,” Eicke told FOX 4 on Tuesday.
About an hour after the first shots were fired, witnesses say Moody saw the two boys in a parking lot and approached them, imploring the 14-year-old to hand over the gun when he was shot in the chest. The boys ran from the parking lot, but were later found at a home at 98th and Holmes in Kansas City where they were arrested.
Moody leaves behind a wife and four kids who ranged in age from 13-to-21 years old. His wife, Sabrina Moody, said her husband was a mentor figure in the neighborhood where people referred to him as, “Pops”.
“He was like the ‘Pops’ of the neighborhood. He didn’t want to see none of these kids, not a one, not even the ones that shot him, he didn’t want them to go down the wrong path,” Sabrina said.
FOX 4 will not identify the accused teens because both are classified and charged as juveniles.
