LAWRENCE, Kan. — Police identified a man found along a busy stretch of K-10 highway on Wednesday morning as 37-year-old Nathan Thurman. Police say Thurman had been staying at the Lawrence Community Center and have scheduled an autopsy, but they do not suspect foul play at this point.

A worker at a business park under construction found Thurman’s body at about 6 a.m., Wednesday.

A 911 call brought paramedics to find him dead within three feet of the pavement. Police tell FOX 4 News his body was lying at a 90 degree angle to the roadway, and there were no obvious signs of trauma.

Police say this section of K-10 is sometimes used by pedestrians.

“There was no vehicle present when we got out here. There’s no vehicle parts or anything that were readily apparent to us, to indicate the person had been struck by a vehicle. We are certainly not ruling that out,” said Sgt. Trent McKinley of the Lawrence police earlier on Wednesday.

The business park under construction used to be a Farmland fertilizer plant, and there’s a right turn lane for truck traffic to get in and out. Since the plant is no longer operating, police say that lane is sometimes used by walkers to get to the shelter, jail or other businesses further east.

While police continue to investigate, anyone who may have seen something along K-10 that can help detectives should call Lawrence police at 785-832-7509.
