OLATHE, Kan. — A 22-year-old Kansas man appeared in court Monday after being charged with raping an Olathe woman in her apartment last month and attempting to kidnap and rape another woman late last year.
Johnson County, Kansas prosecutors charged Jesse M. Akins III with 11 felony counts regarding the two alleged attacks.
Prosecutors say that on July 24, 2014, Akins broke into a 25-year-old woman’s apartment in the 1700 block of North Lennox Drive and assaulted her multiple times. After Akins left the woman called for help. She was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
In court on Monday, FOX 4’s Shannon O’Brien sat next to Akins’ parents who told her they were shocked by the allegations.
Back at the apartment complex, O’Brien located two people who were familiar with Akins and the woman he’s accused of assaulting. A man who helped the victim immediately after the attack said Akins lived in the apartment complex with his girlfriend. Another neighbor said she used to hear Akins and his girlfriend fighting at night.
A judge set Akins’ bond at $2 million. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 21 at 9 a.m. Akins has requested a public defender.
