KANSAS CITY, Mo — Does the Marvel sequel machine score once again? Is Paul Walker’s swan song worth your time? Russ and Shawn give us the lowdown on movies available in video stores or for digital download on September 9th.
1) CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER (PG-13)
Walt Disney Pictures
RUSS:
Like a well-oiled and sophisticated machine manufactured by Stark Industries, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is a slick and competent product, providing Marvel Comics fans with the action and eye candy they expect. Chris Evans returns as the patriotic superhero who has been thawed from his cryogenic sleep and now is making the adjustment from the 1940s to the modern world. The solid cast also includes Robert Redford, Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie and Samuel L. Jackson. A mash-up of Hong Kong-style action, kinetic martial arts and big-budget Hollywood special effects, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” may not be great art, but it’s better than it has any business being.
SHAWN calls it, “Arguably the best Marvel movie ever. ”

2) BRICK MANSIONS (PG-13)
Relativity Media
RUSS
The late Paul Walker stars as an undercover cop who takes on corruption in dystopian future Detroit in the action flick, “Brick Mansions.” Rapper RZA plays a drug kingpin holding a nuclear device and demanding a ransom. The plot is boilerplate and the dialogue is absurd. But for action fans, the movie delivers. There are car chases, excessive of gunplay and plenty of hand-to-hand, Hong Kong-style combat. If mindless action and first rate stunt work is all you demand, then you’ll feel right at home in “Brick Mansions.”
Shawn says that it’s, “messy and poorly executed but very entertaining.”
