PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. – A metro church gives Billy Butler a pass after he walked away with the base he stole Sunday night. Asbury United Methodist Church at 75th and Nall is known for its creative signs.
The witty phrases catch the eyes of congregation members, as well as drivers just passing by. The latest reads: “Thou shalt not steal, unless you are Billy Butler.” The message references Butler’s first stolen base since July of 2012. He stole second base in the bottom of the third inning during Sunday night’s American League Division Series clinching win at Kauffman Stadium.
The sign has everyone talking.
“Every Monday morning we talk about what we want to put on the sign. A lot of times we like to be creative and fun and address an issue that is going on,” said church communications director Eva Hedtke.
“Maybe the Royals will come up with more inspiration for us.”
The church came up with a catchy sign in June, too. After jumping over the Tigers in the AL Central race the church posted a different sign that read: “We’ve been praying for the Royals. You are welcome.”
With Kansas City’s success, it looks like the church’s prayers are paying off!
