INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — The Boys and Girls Club in Independence is one of the first around the country launching a new technology program called My.future.

“I’m not really that good with technology so it will be something good for me to learn,” said Daneisha Crofton, who goes to the Boys and Girls Club every day.

The Boys and Girls Club in Independence and Comcast have teamed up to create a new technology curriculum called My.Future that will be available to each Boys and Girls Club across the country.

“It’s a great opportunity to expose our teens to a variety of things, with us moving forward in the 21st century, technology is a huge deal in all walks of life whether it’s academics, social, so it’s really important that we educate our teens,” said Jamal Malone, the Teen Services Director at the Boys and Girls Club.

He says the new program will help the kids learn more about digital technology and the resources that are available to them.

“Graphic design available to our members, learning how to do keyboarding, learning how to do coding for different software programs,” added Malone.

“It will assist the kids in navigating safely throughout the internet,” said David Grubbs, with Comcast.

Grubbs says it’s important to have this type of technology available at a place where kids spend a lot of time.

“It helps underprivileged youth,” added Grubbs.

“They may have limited resources elsewhere,” Malone added.

The hope is this new program will help the kids in the future.

“Making sure they’re prepared while they’re here at the club,” Malone said.

“I’m not really around the computers unless I have homework or to research something,” said Crofton, “I think it will help me a lot, I’m looking at colleges now, so, it will be good experience for that.”

Comcast is giving the Boys and Girls Club a $45,000 technology grant to help support the program.
