OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. — Stopped by police because he was walking down the street with his hands in his pockets. The officer said he was “making people nervous.” Brandon McKean, an African-American man, recorded his conversation with the white police officer.
In an interview with CNN, Oakland County, Mich., Sheriff Michael Bouchard said McKean posted the video online with an agenda.
“He wasn’t stopped because he simply because he was walking on the sidewalk and had his hands in his pockets, he was stopped because there was a 911 call from a business that described him walking past their window five to six times, and this business — or one of their employees — has been held up seven times. They were afraid there was an imminent armed robbery.”
Bouchard went on to say the public is always encouraged to call 911 if there is something or someone who makes them afraid or suspicious. Bouchard said the encounter with McKean and the officer has been misrepresented by some media.
Bouchard also said when a police officer does his job right, it’s his job to stand by them.
