LEAWOOD, Kan. — A car slammed into a Leawood doctor’s office on Monday afternoon, shattering glass and sending furniture flying.

It happened around 3:30 p.m. at Healient Physician Group on College Boulevard.

Witnesses told Fox 4 an elderly patient was trying to park her car near the front of the building when she hit the gas pedal instead of her brakes. The mistake sent her car flying through a glass window and into a lobby.

“We were all going about our daily business and we heard a loud crash boom,” recalled Dr. David Burkart. “It sounded like a bomb went off in the lobby and we went out there and smoke had filled the lobby. Everybody was wondering what was going on, and there was broken glass everywhere.”

Dr. Burkart said the car landed in a lobby that is usually filled with patients.

“The car actually crashed through the door and smashed one of the chairs into a bunch of pieces,” he said, “so had a patient been sitting there, that could’ve been pretty problematic for them.”

Thankfully, no one was hurt and the woman driving the car was able to walk away. Crews began repairing the building Monday evening.
