OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — To mark the one year anniversary of the Overland Park shootings at both the Jewish Community Center and Village Shalom, the victims’ families are doing something to give back to the community.

The Corporon and LaManno families have shown such amazing grace in the face of great tragedy.

Mindy Corporon and Jim LaManno, whose family members were killed, say they are giving back to the community that cradled them during their darkest time.

Last April 13, 69-year-old William Corporon and his grandson, 16-year-old Reat Underwood were killed at the Jewish Community Center. Terri LaManno, 53, was gunned down at Village Shalom.

To commemorate the first anniversary of the multiple murders, Mindy Corporon and Jim LaManno have organized what they are calling, “Seven Days to Make a Ripple, Change the World,” April 7 thru the 13, to inspire acts of kindness.

Each day will have a theme; love, discover, others, connect, go and you, with activities corresponding to each theme. Their overall message: how people can survive tragedies with a positive outlook and give back to the community.

“Clearly we are living in a very broken society….overcome those random acts of hate,” said Mindy Corporon.

The week will be filled with events including speeches by a Holocaust survivor, a genocide survivor and local inspirational speakers.

At the end a peace walk will wrap up the week on April 13, the anniversary of the tragedy.

The theme that day will be ‘onward’; to take the Seven Days Onward and continue random acts of kindness.
