KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City, Mo. police pursuit ended in a crash Thursday night.

Police said the crash happened near 6th and Walnut. Five cop cars lined each side of the interstate headed towards Interstate 70 east. Fire crews were also on scene.

Police said the crash followed a police chase for two suspects involved in an Independence shooting.

Police said two suspects fled the scene in Independence and drove towards the Kansas City area. Independence police said they chased the car until it crossed into the KCMO territory, where KCMO police took over.

“We had a report that Independence was in a vehicle pursuit in regard to shooting suspect,” police captain Greg Williams said. “They lost it, we picked up the vehicle.”

Police said the suspect’s car hit two cars in the downtown area during the chase, which lasted between 10 and 15 minutes. During the chase, police said speeds reached up to 90 miles per hour.

The drivers of the vehicles hit suffered minor injuries, according to police.

“There’s nobody that got hurt,” captain Williams said. “With something like this, it’s always frightening but in this case everything worked out.”

Police chased the car to the corner of 21st and Holly in KCMO, where the car was stopped. One suspect was arrested at the scene. The other fled on foot but was arrested minutes later after being found hiding under a deck in the 2300 block of Jarboe St.

Steven S. Dowland, 32, has been charged with a felony for resisting arrest, according to the Jackson County prosecutor.

Prosecutors said Dowland told police he fled from the scene in a vehicle because he had outstanding warrants and was under the influence of drugs.
