INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Police are investigating after a fatal hit-and-run incident involving two vehicles in Independence on Friday night.

According to Independence Police, the crash occurred around 9:15 p.m. at US 24 and Blue Mills when a 2008 Dodge 2500 Pick-up traveling east on US 24 rear-ended a 2014 Mazda 6 that was stopped at a red light at Blue Mills.

A witness told FOX 4 that the driver of the Dodge fled then fled the scene of the wreck on foot into a dense wooded area near an industrial park just west of Fort Osage High School.

The driver of the Mazda, identified as a 34-year-old male, was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead. His identity has not been released pending notification of his family.

There is no description of the alleged suspect. Police are asking anybody with information about the case to call the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-TIPS.
