TOPEKA, Kan. — Authorities say a carjacking suspect was wounded after being shot by police on Friday night.
According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, officers responded to a reported carjacking at a gas station at 6011 SW 29th Street shortly before 9:30 p.m. on Friday. About half an hour later, an off-duty Topeka Police officer in a marked patrol car attempted to stop an erratic driver eastbound on K-4.
The driver, later identified as the suspect in the earlier carjacking, lost control of the vehicle and crashed in the 2300 block of Auburn Road in Shawnee County.
The suspect, who was armed with a rifle, then allegedly carjacked another vehicle before finally being stopped at I-70 and Wanamaker Road after allegedly ramming a police car. The suspect then allegedly opened fire on police who returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times.
Police say that the suspect, identified as 38-year-old Richard Reed of Maple Hill, Kansas, was taken to an area hospital in unknown condition. Charges in the case have not yet been filed.
No officers or citizens were injured in the incident, which is being investigated by the KBI, Topeka Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol and the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office.
