KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One nurses aide describes his boss at Grace Hospice as someone with a big heart and reached out to FOX 4 to nominate her for FOX 4’s Pay-It-Forward Award.

Christopher Fender said Sheila Cleavenger recently inspired him to upgrade his certification from CNA to RN, and she continues to inspire others.

“She is such a great person, and she goes out of her way to help our staff and our patients to make sure that everyone is taken care of on a daily basis,” Fender said. “I just wanted to thank her for it.”

Fender says Cleavenger comes in around 7 a.m., and sometimes works until 8 or 9 p.m., to ensure sure the daily operations for a patient is good for the following day.

“She came to your mind for Pay-It-Forward. Just a small token to tell her that we do appreciate her,” Fender said.

When FOX 4 and Fender stopped by Cleavenger’s office to surprise her, she was shocked.

“I don’t believe you, I don’t even know what to say,” Cleavenger said when presented with $300 as part of the award. “I’m in shock. I’m in total shock. I don’t even know what to say.”
