ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — The Buchanan County prosecutor charged 23-year-old Justin Paul Appleberry with second degree murder on Monday.

Police say Appleberry shot and killed 74-year-old Louis Nold on Sunday night at Nold’s home south of St. Joseph. Prosecutors allege he forced his way into Nold’s home by kicking the back door open, grabbed a gun and shot the victim.

Authorities with the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office found Nold unresponsive when they arrived to his home. A witness identified Appleberry, who gave statements to investigators that led to his arrest.

According to court documents, Appleberry once lived with Nold. The murder suspect is in jail on a $100,000 bond.
