LEAVENWORTH, Kan. — Did you know that just below a popular candle company in Leavenworth, Kan., there is a tunnel, which is just one of the many below the town.

“There are lots of stories about them,” said Stacy McCowen, Owner Candle Queen Candles. “We’ve heard that they were used for the underground railroad. We’ve heard that they may have been used to transport coal from the river throughout the city because that’s how they warmed up their stores during the winter.”

According to McCowen, there are a lot of people who live in Leavenworth who don’t even know about the tunnels.

“I feel very lucky that we have a tunnel under our store,” McCowen said. “There’s a lot of stores that don’t have them, and it’s just a great little piece of history that we can show up to the community.”
