KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Monday is the observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and across the metro, people are celebrating his legacy with community service projects. That includes youth groups in Kansas City, Kansas.
There are a number of projects happening right now in KCK. At the 8th Street family YMCA youth volunteer groups are completing a handful of projects from gardening to cleaning out storage spaces.
The club’s executive director, Simeon Henderson, says there’s always plenty of work to be done. The building is a hundred years old. He says he’s grateful the youth groups chose to give back to “the Y.”
“It shows how important the YMCA is the community and how much community members value the YMCA to volunteer to donate their time. They could be doing anything anywhere else but instead they choose to come here,” said Henderson.
The youth volunteer groups are helping other nonprofits in KCK. Groups split up and spent some time sorting donations at a local thrift store and also socialized with cats at an area animal shelter.
