GREENWOOD, Mo. — Kansas City has lots of fun places to learn about, but an animal sanctuary in Greenwood is one-of-a-kind.

Monkey Island Animal Rescue and Sanctuary is home to abandoned and unwanted exotic animals.

As a part of All Access KC, FOX 4’s Matt Stewart takes you inside Monkey Island to learn more about their operation and to meet a few of the animals.  While there, Matt met a one-week-old white-handed gibbon.

Dana Savorelli runs Monkey Island. Dana says he got his first monkey when he was just 12-years old. His second monkey came from a zookeeper at the Kansas City Zoo.

“Everyone’s got a hobby,” Dana said. “This is a really expensive one.”

Monkey Island is a non-profit organization.  Midwest Tongs helps provide funding for the sanctuary.

Monkey Island is not open to the public, but the sanctuary says those who drive along South Harris Road can see the monkeys and lemurs climb trees and play on the monkey bars.
