OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Hundreds were expected to gather in Overland Park Tuesday night to pay their respects to Andrew Maloney.

The service at the Church of the Holy Cross comes after an emotional candlelight vigil on Sunday to honor the 17-year-old Shawnee Mission West football player who died Friday, after he suffered a stroke at a football game Thursday evening.

Tuesday night’s visitation was to be held from 7-10 p.m. at The Church of the Holy Cross, 8311 W. 93rd St. in Overland Park.

A funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m. also at Holy Cross.

Star wide receiver Andre Maloney had just made a 63-yard touchdown reception when he stumbled to the sideline and collapsed.  At first, many suspected Maloney was dehydrated when he reported feeling light-headed at the and game between Shawnee Mission West and Leavenworth West.

He was taken by ambulance to Research Medical Center in Kansas City on Thursday where it was determined he had suffered a stroke. Maloney underwent surgery to remove a blood clot, but died on Friday.

Maloney had signed an organ donation card, and in his death has helped five people receive the organs they need.

A memorial fund was established by Don Perkins, athletic director at the school, to help Andre’s family.
