OLATHE, Kan. — Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe announced charges, including attempted first-degree murder, against 18-year-old Clarence Daniel Hartnell IV on Wednesday afternoon. Hartnell is accused of using a knife to attack a victim who he allegedly raped earlier this week. Hartnell was arrested on Monday afternoon by Merriam police.
In addition to those charges, Hartnell is also accused of aggravated kidnapping and criminal threat. Court documents state that Hartnell allegedly held the 21-year-old victim against their will to commit the rape. Furthermore, he’s accused of making a criminal threat against Shawnee Mission Medical Center that was intended to disrupt normal business operations.
Hartnell made his first appearance in court on Wednesday and is due back on October 9. He’s being held on a $500,000 bond according to the district attorney’s office.
