OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Overland Park Police are investigating a shooting that happened late Friday evening in the 8900 block of Reeder. Police received a 911 call about 11:45 p.m. Friday night reporting a shooting. When officers arrived they found one victim that had died from a gunshot wound.
Initial investigation points to the shooting being an accident. Detectives continue to talk with people who were at the scene as the investigation continues.
FOX 4 learned on Monday that the victim was 23-year-old Jacob Ruis of Overland Park, Kan.
Investigators say an acquaintance inside Ruis’ apartment shot him.
On Monday, FOX 4 spoke to Jacob Ruis’ brother, Curtis, who shared Jacob’s picture with us and wrote the following statement about his brother:
He was 23-years old and was the most amazing brother, son, uncle, and friend u could ever ask for. He never got in any trouble and always worked his hardest for everything he had or wanted. He was always their (sic) for you when you needed him no matter what and was always happy and joking and making the people around him better. He influenced everyone around him and everyone loved him. We have lost a true angel in a tragic accident. Gun safety should always be practiced and everything you do should be double and triple checked but in no instance should those involved in this tragedy be blamed in any way. As bad as it hurts this was without a doubt an accident. His friends that were with him loved him and meant no harm. They wish it never happened and they miss him very much. Please do not blame them for this accident. They now have to live with tragedy for the rest of their lives. We are just glad that in his final moments that he was with friends that love him and tried their best to save his life. He will be forever missed and never forgotten. He’ll be in our hearts forever he’ll be watching over us from heaven. God could not have gotten a better angel.
