SHAWNEE, Kan. — A Shawnee man is alive thanks to a complete stranger who called 911. Steve Fleming decided to take a ride on his motorcycle last Thursday to get out and enjoy the weather.
He doesn’t remember what happened next, but his wife says after a serious accident he ended up in the hospital to undergo emergency surgery. Doctors removed Fleming’s spleen in the first surgery. Fleming’s wife, Kim, says two more surgeries were performed to remove broken bones.
Kim says whoever called 911 saved her husband’s life.
“If they wouldn’t have called it in, by the time I would have realized he was late getting home, he would have been gone,” she said. “He would not have survived the accident.”
Now, Kim hopes her husband will serve as an inspiration for others to do the right thing and call for help.
“If you’re afraid to stop, don’t stop,” she said. “Just call. I want to say thank you for calling because you saved his life. Truly, you saved his life.”
The Flemings still don’t know who called 911. Kim says Steve does plan to ride his motorcycle again. She says they always wear protective gear and says doctors told her his helmet and jacket also helped to save his life.
