KANSAS CITY, Mo. — She was a new mom to Zoey, born on September 11, 2012. According to Kasandra Perkins’s Instagram profile, that was the greatest day of her life. She said she loved Zoey and she loved her home state of Texas.  Kasandra had dreams, too. Her friends say she wanted to be a teacher. She studied at the Blue River Campus of Metropolitan Community College.

“She was always happy,” said Jennifer Ashely, friend. “Very energetic, loving caring, very down to earth. She was a great person.”

Ashley said she saw Kasandra the day before she was murdered at the gym, and she seemed happy. They had plans to meet soon, plans that would never come true.

Early pictures from her friends in Texas show Kasi smiling, vibrant, full of life. One person who knew her even posted a collage of pictures featuring her, saying Kasi is lighting up heaven with her beauty. Monday, Kasi’s family released a statement, saying their hearts are truly broken and that Kasi will be truly missed.

Her cousin, Whitney, and her cousin’s husband, Jamaal Charles, also say their family has suffered a personal tragic loss. They say “Kasandra was not only family, but a friend, and a loving mother.”

It’s a sentiment echoed by so many who knew her, and by those who just saw her smiling face for the first time online after her death.
