KANSAS CITY, Mo.–  One person died in a crash early Wednesday morning on I-70 near Van Brunt.

The crash happened around 2:15 a.m. between a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer.

Investigators said the semi stopped because eastbound traffic came to a halt due to road construction.   The semi driver told police he turned on his flashers and tapped his brakes to let drivers behind him see he had stopped.

According to police, the driver of the pickup didn’t notice the semi was standing still and smashed into the rear of the semi’s 53-foot trailer.  The  whole left side of the pickup was sheared back after it hit the trailer.

The driver of the pickup was a 31-year-old man. He died at the scene. The man’s identity has not been released pending family notification.

The driver of the semi was not injured.
