LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. — Folks in Lee’s Summit have been waiting all winter for this — the opening day of their much loved Farmer’s Market.

Voted the best in Missouri, the market’s also open the longest from early April through late November.  It’s a savory offering of all things local.

It’s early, but its open. From beef to bread to blooms — it’s the best of what the area has to offer.

“Paula Dean makes ox tail soup.  It’s tender, lean meat and rich,” Mark Scounce of the Scounce Farm told FOX 4 News.

The winds of spring are blowing and for loyal customers of the market, it’s about time.

“We all have a little cabin fever and we’re glad spring is finally coming at this late date,” said Bill Chapman.

In the America’s favorite farmers market contest, Lee Summit’s 30-plus vendors were voted humber 1 in the Show-Me-State.

Maybe that has something to do with all of the free taste tests.  Or it could be the homemade cookies everyone was enjoying for breakfast.

Maybe its just the comraderie of talking face to face with the ones who make the products, even if the late winter will delay some early spring produce.

“The last two days we got onions in the ground and seeds for sugar snap peas and radish.  Spinach and lettuce are normally out by first of May.  It’s going to be the 15th of May or later this year,” explained Rita O’Hara of O’Hara’s Garden.

Vendors will have plenty to sell.

“Today, I have a Red Berry Rubarb pie and tart.  It’s rasberry, strawberry and rubarb topped with oat strusel,” said Anna Alaarez of Sweet Anna’s Cakes.

There’s also organic coffee, handmade candles and music.

And the good moods of people sure that if the farmers market is open, spring is finally on its way.

The market is open Wednesday and Saturday from 7:00 am to sell out.

In May, the market will have a huge spring celebration with crafts and cooking demonstrations.
