OLATHE, Kan. A Johnson County district judge has decided Frazier Glenn Cross will go to trial. The 74-year-old Cross stands accused of shooting three people in April 2014 in his thirst to kill Jewish people.
Cross’ two-day preliminary hearing ended on Tuesday afternoon. He will be arraigned on March 27th, as Judge Thomas Ryan rules the state has satisfied its burden of proof, and can pursue murder charges against Cross.
Cross is charged with six felony counts related to the shootings of three people in Overland Park’s Jewish facilities, including the murders of three people.
Unlike Monday, when Cross was calmer, the former Ku Klux Klan member shouted at people in the courtroom, including Judge Ryan, whom Cross accused of “wanting to protect the Jews.”
Cross stands accused of being the gunman who killed Reat Underwood, William Corporon and Terri LaManno on April 13th of 2014.
Cross used a racial slur toward one person in the courtroom, and angrily threatened to fire his attorneys in another fit of rage.
On Monday, Overland Park police officers testified Cross attempted to recruit them into his mission to kill Jewish people while they took him into custody last April. One officer testified that Cross asked them if they were of an Aryan descent.
Cross also made reference to a anti-Semitic website during another rant. All told, Cross will face six charges, three of them for the murders of Underwood, Corporon and LaManno, and three others for shooting at three other people outside the Jewish Community Center and Village Shalom assisted living center.
On Tuesday, a number of crime scene investigators and forensic specialists testified, including Dr. Charles Glenn, who assisted with autopsies on the three victims. Dr. Glenn said the injuries suffered by Underwood and Corporon, like the ones LaManno experienced, were deliberate and meant to kill.
“I don’t think she would have been conscious after the impact,” Dr, Glenn said. speaking of LaManno’s injuries.
If Cross is found guilty of these murders, he would likely face the death penalty. Until then, he is being held in the Johnson County Detention Center without bond.
