KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Whether you have young children or are taking care of aging family members, there are simple and cheap devices you can buy to help keep your loved ones safe.

Keeping her grandkids safe is high priority for grandmother Loretta Amayo. Stories about wandering children are a constant reminder that it could happen to anyone, including her grandkids.

“It’s that scary feeling in the pit of your stomach. It’s like, how could they have gone so fast, they were just standing here,” said Amayo.

Amayo felt that fear spread when she thought her granddaughter wandered off.

“Somehow or another she snuck in on us and we didn’t know she was inside and we were frantically going up and down the neighborhood looking for her and hollering for her. My daughter who was inside at the time said, ‘mom she’s inside watching TV,’” Amayo said with a sigh.

Sometimes guardians need a little extra help.  Tracey Hawkins, a security expert at Safety and Security Source, recommends window and door alarms. Most are under $20.

“Everything is affordable. There’s no excuse for people to not keep your family safe,” Hawkins said.

In Amayo’s house, the grandkids outnumber the adults. Amayo admits that keeping an eye on them at all times is hard.

“I came out here to do something and I tried to get in and they locked the door on me. And I had to know to get in so I know they know to lock and unlock the door,” Amayo said.

Amayo says anything that keeps her grandkids safe is worth purchasing.
