KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Embattled GOP U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin has issued a new campaign ad asking voters for forgiveness following comments he made about rape to an interviewer in St. Louis over the weekend.
The ad, called “Forgiveness,” Akin calls rape an “evil act” and apologized for his comments over rape and pregnancy given to KTVI FOX-2 over the weekend, in which he claimed that victims of “legitimate rape” don’t get pregnant because their bodies have a way to “shut that whole thing down.”

The comments have caused a firestorm across the nation, as national GOP candidates seek to distance themselves from Akin, and call on him to quit the race. Akin has said that he intends to stay in the race – he has until 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday to decide.
Despite the controversy surrounding the comments, a new poll taken on Monday night shows that while a vast majority of voters disagree with what he said, he still maintains a one-point lead over incumbent Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, 44 to 43 percent.
