MERRIAM, Kan. — Firefighters responded to an apartment fire Monday night in the 7100 block of Eby Dr. in Merriam, Kan.

Firefighters from Merriam and Overland Park fire departments responded to the blaze just before 10 p.m. Crews quickly determined there was a fire in the electrical panel in the basement of the two-story apartment building.

Residents were evacuated and firefighters were able to knock down the fire with extinguishers, however crews were forced to fight the fire in a defensive mode until KCP&L could cut power to the building. Shortly before 11:30 p.m. power was cut and firefighters were able to offensively fight the fire, which by this point had traveled into the attic. Around 11:50 p.m. firefighters had the fire under control.

No injuries were reported. A number of animals were rescued from the building. Residents from approximately 16 units were displaced and apartment management is working to relocate them.
