KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One Kansas City police officer includes cooling as part of his duty to protect and serve.

Officer Patrick Bird answered a call of a disoriented woman near Linwood and Indiana.

He drove her just a couple of blocks to her home where he discovered Helen Adams didn’t have a working air conditioner.

Officer Bird to the Bishop Sullivan’s Elder Cool program and a little while later a new window air conditioning unit was delivered and being installed.

“She’s a very nice lady and I couldn’t see myself leaving her out in the heat like that,” said Officer Bird.

Health officials encourage everyone to check on their neighbors during a heat wave, especially the elderly.

Officer Bird says he plans to look in on Adams from time to time.
