KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Assault charges against the son of Kansas City, Missouri, Mayor Sly James have been dropped after his accuser didn’t show up for the trial on Friday.
Kyle James, 23, was accused of punching a woman at the Point Bar near the Country Club Plaza last August.
James declined to talk to the media, but his attorney, Coulter Devries, says that he isn’t surprised that the accuser decided not to testify.
“If the witness doesn’t show up, that tells you that the witness probably didn’t want to get under oath and have to perhaps not tell the truth. The other three witnesses that we have here today, they were willing to tell the truth,” said Devries.
A few weeks before the incident, James was accused of dining and dashing from Fran’s Restaurant in the Power and Light District, and threatening a police officer who handcuffed him.
Charges were not filed in that incident, but James did issue a public apology.
